Background
After completing a degree in fine art sculpture at Norwich school of Art and Design in 2000, Natalie then furthered her knowledge undertaking a degree in ceramics and glass at Sunderland University. Natalie is currently based in Newcastle upon Tyne.
His work and inspirations
Natalie is inspired by the idea of science and inner spaces. She uses acrylic on canvas to create miniature landscapes - as if viewed through a microscope. Fascinated by different layering techniques, through either applying washes of translucent white or conversely, by removing paint to reveal the pigment beneath, Natalie likes to either ‘build-up’ a piece or ‘cut-it down’. This process allows her to control the semi-obscured history of the painting, revealing snippets of colour beneath.
Organic and technological forms dominate her compositions. They are multi-layered and full of activity compelling the viewer to think about the elements that form and enhance life.
Natalie reflects, “This is my visual language with which I'm attempting to interpret and clarify a huge world, on tiny scale. By exploring the ideas of mutation and understanding through repetition, I play with my own imagined ecosystems thus translating myself. I question where ' I ' end and the environment begins, where do the natural and the synthetic meet. I like to lose myself on a microscopic scale.”
Recent Exhibitions
Natalie’s work has been exhibited throughout the north of England since 2005. Most recently her work has featured at the Vermilion Gallery, Richard Ling Gallery, as part of the Gateshead Art Fair, Mushroom Works Gallery and at Biscuit Factory, Newcastle.
